From this service he received land in Linn Co., Mo....it was sold after he died here in Bienville Parish ca 1853. His widow Emily Devereaux Chesnutt, along with her children [Andrew, Curtis A. (He was a Pvt. Co., H, 9th La. Infty.) and John], later moved into Natchitoches Parish, where the town of Chestnut was formed. I have tryed for years, without success, to tie these two lines together and still hope that I will eventually do just that." (7/5/98)

But his burial place remains a mystery. The family tradition on his Battle wounds at Mansfield...they said he had a metal plate in his head as a result of the injury, but since no records can be found that will have to remain only as a "family story".

"Walter was married to Missouri Horn and she is 1st cousin to H.K.H. Horn [Sgt. Co.H, Grays] and John W. Horn [Co.E. 13th Battn.La. Partisan Rangers] who are Civil War Veterans, also from Bienville Parish. Walter's brother Wm. Henry had sons C.K. Chesnutt & John R. Chesnutt who are listed on the Civil War Rolls for Co.C, 9th Infty."
